Often overlooked, skirting boards are nonetheless essential to the finish of a room. Here is how to choose them well and fit them properly.
What Are Skirting Boards For?
- Protecting the bottom of the walls against knocks and marks
- Concealing the wall-to-floor junction, which is rarely perfect
- Creating an attractive transition between two surfaces
- Adding a final decorative touch
The Different Materials
MDF Skirting Boards
Affordable and easy to paint, they suit most projects. Avoid them in damp rooms.
Polyurethane Skirting Boards
Moisture-resistant, lightweight and easy to fit. Ideal for bathrooms and kitchens.
Solid Wood Skirting Boards
Authentic and hard-wearing, they bring warmth and character. More expensive, but timeless.
Choosing the Right Height
- Low skirting boards (5-8 cm): a modern, minimalist look
- Medium skirting boards (10-15 cm): the balance between discreet and elegant
- Tall skirting boards (15-25 cm): a classic, stately look
General rule: the higher the ceiling, the taller the skirting board can be.
Fitting Them Step by Step
1. Prepare the Surfaces
Clean the bottom of the walls and make sure the floor has been laid and finished.
2. Take the Measurements
Measure each wall and transfer the measurements onto the skirting boards. Allow for the corners.
3. Cut the Corners
Use a mitre box for perfect 45° cuts. For external and internal corners, the cuts are reversed.
4. Fix the Skirting Boards in Place
Apply the adhesive in a zigzag along the back of the board and press it against the wall. Hold it for a few seconds.
5. Finishing Touches
Fill the joints with acrylic caulk and touch up the paint if needed.
