Laying brick floor tiles — method

Before laying anything, check that the substrate is flat (smoothed screed, levelling compound if the deviation is > 3 mm/m) and apply a bonding primer. In dry rooms, use C2 S1 tile adhesive applied to the substrate only. In wet rooms, on outdoor floors and in walk-in showers, back-buttering is mandatory. Cut with a diamond saw; finish the edges with an angle grinder to preserve the original patina.

Choosing slip resistance — R10 / R11 / R12 classes

Standard indoor floor: R9 is enough. Professional kitchen, staircase, walk-in shower: R10 minimum. Outdoor floor exposed to rain, poolside: R11+ recommended (DIN 51130 standard). Dartank solid bricks and reclaimed slips naturally reach R10 thanks to the texture of the fired clay body; a mineral anti-slip treatment takes them up to R11.

Water-repellent grouts & NHL3.5 lime

For a handcrafted look indoors: NHL3.5 hydraulic lime grout tinted light ochre or grey, brushed after 1 hour of setting. For shower floors, terraces or professional kitchens: 2-component epoxy grout (Mapei Kerapoxy, Sika Sikadur). Natural cement colour by default; tinted for a tone-on-tone or contrasting “solid brick” effect.

BIa frost class for outdoor use

All our reclaimed bricks are BIa frost class (water absorption < 0.5%) — suitable for repeated freeze-thaw cycles. For a terrace, a plinth course or an outdoor footpath, this is the guarantee of a long life with no spalling caused by frost.

Calculating the area you need

Measure the floor area in m², then add 10% for offcuts (15% for herringbone laying). The calculator built into every product page works it out automatically from the pack size (0.5 m² per box for tiles, 1 m² for medium solid bricks). To estimate the number of pieces: one square metre of tiles is roughly 50 pieces (1 cm joint included).

For outdoor installation (terrace, balcony, path), we recommend a brick rated frost class BIa or higher — resistance to 100 cycles in accordance with EN 772-22:2019. Dekoracyjna Cegła bricks meet this standard.

In wet areas (swimming pool, bathroom, terrace exposed to rain), class R11 to R13 is strongly recommended. Our range offers an aged finish that provides natural grip equivalent to R10-R11. For trade requirements (public buildings), ask us for the certificate.

A class C2 S1 adhesive mortar is compulsory for an outdoor floor, or an indoor floor subject to thermal shock. Butter both the substrate and the brick above 0.5 m in height. NHL3.5 lime or water-repellent epoxy joints depending on use.

Allow +15% waste for herringbone laying (compared with +5-10% for straight laying). The surface area calculator on each product page automatically applies the configurable margin.

Yes, provided you use a compatible flowing screed (min. 50 mm thickness above the pipes), a deformable C2 S1 adhesive mortar and a movement joint every 30 m².
