Anatomy of a column
- Capital (at the top) — crowns the column and defines its order (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian).
- Shaft (in the middle) — the vertical part, smooth or fluted, which can be split into several heights.
- Base (at the bottom) — provides the seating and the visual stability on the ground or on a plinth.
Column or pilaster ?
A column is free-standing (set in front of or beside the façade) — a monumental effect, ideal for framing a front door, a porch or a veranda.
A pilaster is flat and fixed against the wall — a more discreet effect, ideal for giving rhythm to a large façade.
Installation and stability
A free-standing column requires fixing to the ground (chemical anchor or screwed base plate) and bonding of the base and the capital to the shaft. For heavy columns (human height and above), provide a dedicated foundation.

The complete column (capital + shaft + base) should measure 1.80 to 3 m depending on the height of the façade. Several shaft segments can be stacked to reach the target height.
Smooth = a contemporary, understated look. Fluted = classical antique inspiration (Greece, Rome), with more rhythm.
For a purely decorative column (non load-bearing), a chemical anchor into the ground or onto a base plate is enough. For a column carrying a roof or a lintel, provide a concrete foundation beneath the base.
