When should you use pressure-treated pine?
For exposed outdoor structures with no direct ground contact: exposed roof framing under a shelter, car shelter / carport, pergola exposed to rain, covered decking structure.
For an indoor structure (roof framing under a watertight roof), choose standard C24 sawn timber without treatment, which is more affordable. For an eco-friendly approach without biocides, see our thermally modified timber (retification) range.
Use class 3 — what does it mean?
Use class 3 under the EN 335 standard covers timber used outdoors, exposed to rain, but with no direct ground contact. For prolonged ground contact or immersion (class 4-5), specific species or treatments are required.

Pressure-treated pine is cheaper and offers a guaranteed use class 3 thanks to vacuum-pressure impregnation. Thermally modified pine is more environmentally friendly (no biocides at all), compliant in BE/LU and more dimensionally stable.
Treated timber must dry for at least 4 to 6 weeks after leaving the autoclave before being fitted, to avoid salts migrating to the surface and staining adjacent materials.
Autoclave-treated pine contains fungicidal and insecticidal salts. No contact with food and no use in dry, inhabited interiors. For those applications, choose thermally modified timber instead.
Use class 3 (exposed outdoors, no ground contact) for boards laid on ventilated joists. Use class 4 (ground contact) for joists laid directly on the ground. NTR-treated pine is use class 3.
