Wooden skirting boards are the traditional option, made from various species such as oak, beech or pine. They give a natural, warm look but are sensitive to moisture, insects and knocks. They need regular maintenance, such as varnishing or painting. Composite skirting boards, such as those in Polyforce, Profoam or Flex, are the modern alternative. They are made from specific polymers that give a smooth, even surface. They are also tougher, lighter and easier to fit than wooden skirting boards. They need no particular maintenance, unless you wish to customise them.

Fitting composite skirting boards, such as those in Polyforce, Profoam or Flex, is quick and straightforward. Simply follow these steps:

  • Measure the length of the wall and cut the skirting board to size.
  • Apply an adhesive suited to the material to the back of the skirting board and press it against the wall.
  • Use prefabricated corner pieces to make the junction between walls easier.
  • Leave the adhesive to dry for about 24 hours before painting, if required.

HD polymer skirting boards, also known as high-density extruded polystyrene skirting boards, offer several advantages over traditional wooden or PVC skirting boards:

  • Moisture resistance: ideal for damp rooms (bathrooms, kitchens), they do not warp.
  • Durability: resistant to impact, scratches and stains, they have a long service life.
  • Easy to fit: lightweight and easy to cut, they can be glued or screwed.

  • Clips or screws: use fixing clips or screws to secure the skirting boards, especially if the floor is not perfectly level.
  • Finishing: use acrylic filler to close the gaps and smooth the joints. Leave to dry and sand lightly before painting, if required.
