Moulding Care and Cleaning: Our Expert Advice

Decorative mouldings bring character to your interior, but they need regular care to stay looking their best. Here is our advice for keeping them in perfect condition.

Routine Cleaning

Dusting

Dust builds up in the relief of the mouldings. We recommend dusting them once a month.

  • Use a duster with soft bristles
  • Or a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush attachment
  • Work from the top down

Light Cleaning

Every 2-3 months, give them a more thorough clean:

  • Mix lukewarm water with a little mild soap
  • Use a sponge or a slightly damp cloth
  • Wipe along the contours of the profile
  • Dry immediately with a dry cloth

Deep Cleaning

For Painted Mouldings

Once a year, or whenever stubborn marks appear:

  1. Mix lukewarm water with white vinegar (1 tablespoon per litre)
  2. Apply with a soft toothbrush to reach the fine detail
  3. Rinse with a clean damp cloth
  4. Dry thoroughly

For Polyurethane Mouldings

Polyurethane is hard-wearing and easy to look after:

  • Soapy water is usually all you need
  • Avoid abrasive products
  • No wax or polish required

Dealing with Common Problems

Yellowing

White mouldings can yellow over time:

  • Clean with a diluted baking soda solution
  • If the yellowing persists, a fresh coat of paint is the answer

Cracks

Hairline cracks can appear over time:

  • Fill them with acrylic caulk
  • Smooth the bead with a damp fingertip
  • Repaint once dry

Sections Coming Loose

If a moulding lifts away in places:

  • Inject installation adhesive behind the moulding
  • Press it home and hold it in place with tape
  • Leave to dry for 24 hours

Prevention

  • Avoid excessive humidity around the mouldings
  • Do not let spiders settle into the recesses
  • Inspect them regularly so problems are caught early
  • Repaint every 5-7 years to freshen them up

Products to Avoid

  • Abrasive or powdered cleaners
  • Scouring sponges
  • Products containing ammonia
  • Concentrated bleach
