Our bench and backrest selection

  • Alder grade A S4S 2.8 × 9 cm (rough timber, sold by the m²) — the traditional Finnish species.
  • Thermally modified Scandinavian pine 4.2 × 9.2 cm, NATURAL grade — the modern alternative, brown tone.
  • Thermally modified oak slat S4S 2.6 × 9.5 cm natural — premium, dense grain.
  • Thermo abachi board 1.8 × 9 cm S4S Nature — pale African timber, very stable.
  • Thermo pine board AB 1.9 or 2.6 × 6.8 to 9.2 cm — a range of sections.
  • Thermo pine square and squared stock 4.2 × 4.2 and 4.2 × 6.8 cm — bearers and fittings.

Skin-contact species compared

Alder — a soft timber, gentle against the skin, moderate thermal conductivity. The traditional species.

Thermally modified pine — the resin is driven off by the treatment, even brown tone, more stable. The modern alternative.

Thermally modified oak — dense, hard-wearing timber, top-of-the-range finish.

Thermo abachi — light, pale African timber, very low thermal conductivity (ideal for a bench).

Alder remains the traditional Finnish timber: soft and resin-free. Thermally modified Scandinavian pine is a more stable, modern alternative. Thermo abachi is the least thermally conductive — ideal so it never burns on contact.
Roughly 1 m below the ceiling, where the heat gathers (steam rises). The lower bench (footrest level) sits 30-40 cm below the main one.
Pine and spruce contain resins that seep out at 80-100 °C — staining, a sticky feel and a risk of burns on contact. Thermal treatment drives these resins off, which makes both species suitable.
15 to 25 years with minimal upkeep. Thermally modified oak is very dense — it stands up well to wear and keeps a handsome brown tone over time.
