Curtain Pelmets: The Elegant Solution

However functional a curtain pole may be, it is not always a thing of beauty. Pelmets offer an elegant way of hiding it while showing your windows off at their best.

Why Fit a Pelmet?

Types of Pelmet

The Cornice

A decorative profile fixed above the window. Available in a wide choice of styles, from classic to contemporary.

The Flat Pelmet Board

A pared-back version with a flat or gently rounded profile. A minimalist look.

The Box Pelmet

An enclosure that closes off the pole recess completely. Ideal for integrated blinds.

Dimensions to Respect

• Width: extend 10-15 cm beyond the window on each side
• Height: at least 10 cm above the pole
• Depth: enough to house the pole and the rings

Installation

Step 1: Measure

Measure the width of your window and add 20-30 cm for the overhangs.

Step 2: Prepare the Supports

Fix battens or angle brackets above and to either side of the window.

Step 3: Assemble the Pelmet

If it comes in several pieces, assemble the pelmet on the floor before fitting it.

Step 4: Fix in Place

Glue and/or screw the pelmet onto the supports you have prepared.

Step 5: Finishing

Fill the joints, sand them down and paint in the colour of your choice.

Integrating LED Lighting

Pelmets are perfect for building in an LED strip:

• Set the strip in a channel facing the ceiling
• Create a halo of light all around the window
• Use a dimmer to fine-tune the mood

Matching Your Decor

• Match the pelmet to the other mouldings in the room
• Paint it the same colour as the walls for a seamless effect
• Or go for a white contrast to make the windows stand out
