In the design of today’s bathrooms, we are moving further and further away from the traditional solution of tiling from floor to ceiling. Instead, we increasingly experiment with different combinations of materials, patterns and textures, choosing unusual variations and creating unique, individual and highly personal spaces. More and more often, tiles are fitted only up to a third of the wall height, and above them coloured paint in bold shades is applied, or hard-wearing glass-fibre or vinyl wallpapers are used, robust enough to be installed even directly in the shower. And how about another original idea – the wall panel in the bathroom?

Benefits of wall panels in the bathroom: the practical side

Wall panels are an excellent alternative to traditional wallpaper. They are of course used in living rooms and bedrooms, but they also find their place in rooms such as the bathroom, where damp and water are part of everyday life. It should be remembered, however, that fitting them directly in the shower is not recommended – that is the one advantage of glass panels. Around the bath, the shower or the washbasins, on the other hand, bathroom wall panels can be installed without any difficulty, protecting the walls from moisture and dirt.

Thanks to their three-dimensional form, the panels add depth to the space, which not only enriches the interior visually but also improves the acoustics by reducing unwanted echo – a key feature in rooms such as the bathroom, where hard surfaces often cause sound to reverberate.

Another significant advantage is the absence of grout lines and the limited number of joints, which keeps to a minimum the places where mould, fungi and bacteria can build up, making cleaning and upkeep easier and improving hygiene. Wall panels also protect walls against mechanical damage, which matters in particular in rooms where daily use can lead to scuffs or knocks.

What is more, wall panels are extremely easy to fit, and that is a huge advantage – most panels available on the market need nothing but adhesive to be installed. Can wall panels be glued onto tiles?

Tiles are, however, a difficult substrate and require proper preparation before installation in order to guarantee a durable and stable fixing.

First of all, the surface of the old tiles has to be matted down using sandpaper, dedicated chemical products or a special primer that will considerably increase the adhesion of the following layers. The next step is choosing the right adhesive – a key aspect in ensuring a durable installation. It must be a high-quality adhesive with strong grab and a short setting time.
