How to fit decorative wall slats in 5 steps

  1. Prepare the substrate — The wall must be clean, dry, flat and dust-free. On new plasterboard, apply a coat of primer.
  2. Mark out the layout — Pencil in the fixing lines. Recommended spacing: equal to the width of one slat for a balanced result.
  3. Apply adhesive to the back of the slat — Run a bead of exterior-grade sealant or neoprene adhesive down the back in a vertical zigzag.
  4. Bond and press — Set the slat against the wall and press firmly for 30 seconds. Check it is plumb with a level.
  5. Trim with a knife — Cut the top slat to suit the height of the room (Dartank slats are 2.75 m long, so you cut one end only).

The recommended spacing is equal to the width of one slat. For slats 30 mm wide, allow a 30 mm gap. This regular spacing creates a balanced visual rhythm and makes full-length installation easier.
All our decorative slats are 2.75 m tall. For taller or lower rooms, simply cut from one end with a jigsaw or a utility knife (MDF slats cut easily).
Yes — vertical slats with gaps create sound diffraction that reduces reverberation. With an absorbent layer behind them (rock wool, foam), they become a genuine decorative acoustic panel.
Ideal for a Scandinavian style (pale slats on a pale background), a New York loft (dark slats contrasting with a concrete wall), a biophilic scheme (natural wood slats) or a contemporary look (lacquered slats).
