Regulatory compliance and upkeep

All our exterior tiles are frost-resistant (EN ISO 10545-12 standard, water absorption < 3%). Fixed with C2 S1 adhesive mortar using double buttering. 5-10 mm water-repellent grout for lasting weatherproofing.

Upkeep: clean with water and mild soap, brush gently if moss appears. Re-apply a water repellent every 5-10 years to preserve the appearance.

How to lay exterior facade tiles in 6 steps

  1. Prepare the substrate — A sound, flat, dry and clean wall. On a new wall, allow 28 days for the concrete/render to cure. Dust it off, then apply a bonding primer.
  2. Set out the layout — Chalk out the setting-out lines: mark the centre of the wall, the vertical axis and the first level horizontal line. Allow for a sacrificial joint (movement joint) every 4 linear metres.
  3. Prepare the adhesive mortarClass C2 S1 adhesive mortar as a minimum (EN 12004 standard), exterior-grade and resistant to frost/UV and standing moisture. Mix as directed by the manufacturer.
  4. Apply with double buttering — Spread the adhesive with a U6 or U9 notched trowel onto the wall (10–20 m² at a time) and onto the back of the tile (double buttering is mandatory outdoors).
  5. Bed and tap in — Place the tile on the adhesive and press with a slight twisting motion to expel the air. Tap it home with a rubber mallet. Check the level and the joints (5–10 mm spacers).
  6. Grout once dry — After 24 h of drying, remove the spacers. Apply a weatherproof exterior grout (mortar or silicone) with a grouting bag. Smooth it with a jointing tool, then clean with a damp sponge.

Dartank offers 8 collections of decorative tiles and slips for façades: the Milano long tile (thin brick), wood-effect cement tiles, 6×6 cm mosaic, mixed decorative tiles, large-format anthracite stoneware, Roman tiles (Roman opus), hexagonal tiling in an old-brick style, and the long vertical façade tile.
An adhesive mortar of class C2 S1 as a minimum to EN 12004, formulated for exterior use. It withstands tensile stress, UV and standing moisture. The back-buttering method (adhesive on the wall plus adhesive on the back of the tile) is mandatory outdoors to guarantee adhesion.
A watertight exterior grout based on water-repellent mortar or neutral-cure silicone. Joint width: 5 to 10 mm depending on the format. It is essential for resisting water and frost and for preventing moisture reaching the substrate.
Allow 30 to 110 € per m² depending on the material: 30-50 €/m² for cement slips, 50-90 €/m² for thin bricks, 70-110 €/m² for reconstituted stone. Professional installation adds 45-80 €/m² depending on how demanding the job is.
Choose a frost-resistant tile to EN ISO 10545-12. Water absorption must be below 3% (class BIa). Dartank's terracotta slips, porcelain stoneware and cement tiles all meet this standard for outdoor use.
