Sauna wood — a guide to timber species by use

Building a sauna means choosing specific timber species according to the role of each part. Our sauna range covers raw timber, panelling, benches and backrests and trim strips, all in species that cope with 80-100 °C and fluctuating humidity.

Sauna-compatible timber species at Dartank

Our saunas are built mainly around alder (the traditional resin-free Finnish species), thermally modified Scandinavian pine in Rhombus x3V diamond profiles (the modern alternative), Thermo abachi (a light African timber that conducts very little heat), thermally modified oak (a dense premium slat) and Scandinavian spruce (economical cladding).

Which species for which part?

  • Wall and ceiling cladding → Scandinavian spruce, thermally modified pine, diamond-profile panelling.
  • Benches and backrests (skin contact) → alder, thermally modified abachi, thermally modified oak (resin-free).
  • Trim strips (corners, skirtings) → alder, thermally modified abachi, thermally modified pine.

Frequently asked questions

For benches and backrests (skin contact): alder or thermo-treated abachi (resin-free, low heat conduction). For wall cladding: Scandinavian spruce (budget) or thermo-treated pine in the Rhombus x3V profile (premium).
Yes for surfaces in direct contact (benches, backrests). Resinous species (standard pine, fir) bleed resin at 80 °C — which rules them out for skin contact. Thermal treatment drives out that resin, making pine and other species suitable.
15 to 25 years with minimal upkeep (solvent-free sauna oil every 2-3 years, ventilation after use).
TIGA S concealed clips for the Rhombus x3V profiles. Fixings are always hidden on the user side.
