Anatomy of a complete surround

  • Window mouldings (vertical jambs + lintel) — frame the window on three sides.
  • Full sill or sill moulding — the lower horizontal part; sheds the water.
  • Keystone — central element at the top of the lintel, a decorative motif.
  • Pediment — triangular or segmental crown above the window.
  • Corbels beneath the sill — visually support the sill from below.
  • Window cornice — horizontal moulding above the lintel.

Architectural styles

A window surround can be plain and contemporary (flat moulding + simple sill), or richly classical (surround + keystone + pediment + corbels + cornice). Match the level of ornament to the overall style of the house.

Installation

Every element is fitted by bonding with exterior adhesive sealant. The full sill matters because it ensures water run-off — check the outward fall (1 to 3°) when fitting.

Frequently asked questions

No — you can fit only the vertical mouldings + sill for a minimal surround, or add a keystone, pediment and corbels for a richly classical look. Adapt it to your own style.
Yes — the full sill has a built-in fall of 1 to 3° towards the outside and a drip groove on its underside to stop water tracking back by capillary action. Essential to the durability of the façade.
Measure the width of your window (the inner reveal). The mouldings project 2 to 4 cm all round — so the surround width = reveal width + 4 to 8 cm.
