R11 slip-resistance rating — poolside
For poolside decks or decking heavily exposed to rain, aim for R11 (DIN 51130) — grip with footwear on inclines up to 27°. The grooved profile significantly improves the coefficient of friction. For barefoot use in wet areas (pool coping), DIN 51097 class C is recommended.
RE2020 compliance and getting ready for RE2028
Any PEFC/FSC-certified bio-based material (larch, thermo pine, FAS exotic hardwoods) fits the RE2020 low-carbon strategy. RE2028, which applies from 1st January 2026, lowers the Ic construction threshold to 6.5 kg CO₂/yr/m². Retified timber and larch both contribute to biogenic carbon storage.

Thermally modified pine is the best compromise between durability and sustainability (15-20 years, no biocides). Canadian larch is the finest of the softwoods (20-25 years). FAS-grade tropical hardwoods (Tanimbuca, Angelim, Massaranduba) last 25-40 years. WPC composite offers maximum longevity with no chemical maintenance (25-30 years).
For boards 2.6 cm thick, the recommended spacing is 40 to 50 cm between centres. For thicker sections (3 cm and above), up to 60 cm. Always keep an air gap beneath the decking (pedestals or shims of at least 4 cm).
Canadian larch and thermally modified pine are the greenest — bio-based, biocide-free and well suited to BE/LU. WPC composite contains PVC and wood flour — less green but very hard-wearing. FSC-certified FAS tropical hardwoods carry a higher transport footprint.
Yes, like any timber used outdoors. It develops a silver-grey patina within 6 to 18 months. This is reversible with a wood brightener and slowed down by a decking oil every 2 to 4 years.
R10 = medium grip (covered terrace). R11 as a minimum for an exposed terrace (poolside, unsheltered outdoors). R12 for a steep slope. For barefoot use in wet areas, DIN 51097 class C.
